Some of you have asked about this, so we now offer a firing service for jewelry pieces made from Art Clay Silver.

Although silver clay can also be fired at home without a kiln — you can read more about this by clicking here — for many people, using our firing service offers a safer solution. Below, we explain everything you need to know about the firing service, so please read all the information carefully.

How does the Art Clay Silver jewelry firing service work?

Our firing service works as follows: pieces can be dropped off on the days of our current workshops, at a pre-arranged time, usually a few minutes before the workshop begins. If possible, we fire them during or after the workshop, but this is always discussed and agreed in advance. We will also arrange when you can come back to collect them — or whether you may be able to wait for them — depending on the number of workshop participants and the number of pieces you would like to have fired.

Costs of Art Clay Silver Clay Firing Service

The firing costs approximately 500 HUF per item, or a maximum of 2000 HUF if multiple items can be placed on one firing tray. We will always discuss and agree on this individually, as each item is different.

The firing service is provided at our Budapest workshop location.

Important information before firing silver clay

Only completely dry pieces can be submitted for firing
Pieces submitted for our firing service must be completely dry. We are unable to dry submitted pieces separately before firing, and we cannot take responsibility for whether they are fully dry.
Why is this important? Because silver clay jewelry and objects that still contain moisture may explode in the kiln, and during the explosion they may also damage other pieces.

Firing jewelry with stones
During our firing service, jewelry pieces are fired at 800°C for 10 minutes. For this reason, any stones set into the jewelry must be able to withstand this heat exposure without damage or color loss.
We cannot take responsibility for stones that were not purchased from us. In our webshop, you can find stones that we have already tested and that withstand firing without losing their color or shape.

We only fire the pieces — the finishing is your responsibility
As part of the firing service, we only fire the pieces. We do not finish them, which means that cleaning, polishing, refining, and any other finishing work are your responsibility.

Firing complex forms that may be prone to deformation
If you would like to bring an Art Clay Silver jewelry piece with a form that may deform during firing, please always contact us in advance to discuss the possibilities.

Bachelorette Party – Art Clay Silver Jewelry Making Workshop at Fonciére Budapest Studio

In August, Milla contacted us because she and her friends wanted to take part in a silver jewelry-making workshop for her sister’s bachelorette party. Then, on the Saturday afternoon set for September, the cheerful group of girls spent a few hours with us before continuing on to celebrate. This special and festive occasion was a first for us as well. We had already been planning to prepare for similar events and introduce the possibility of bachelorette workshops, but Milla and her group got there before us — and we were happy to tune in quickly and wholeheartedly.

We coordinated in advance what the exact plan would be, what we would prepare, what they wanted, and what would definitely be a lasting memory beyond the experience itself.

At the beginning of the bachelorette workshop, we talked over tea about the material, the process, and the creative possibilities. We looked at sample pieces together, then demonstrated how to shape the silver clay.
The girls then began designing their own pieces, each coming up with different ideas. Most of them were possible to make, while a few designs needed a little adjustment. During the bachelorette workshop, each participant used 7 g of Art Clay silver clay to create a pendant or small charms for herself. At the end of the workshop, these were strung onto silver chains, and everyone immediately put on their finished jewelry. The few hours we spent together were filled with joy and enthusiastic making. Each piece reflects the personality of its creator, yet the shared creative experience is also present in every necklace: a very personal pendant that will surely remind them all of the bachelorette party whenever they wear it.

It was a joy to work with the kind, smiling, festive group, and we are now enthusiastically planning to host more celebrations, birthdays, and bachelorette parties!

Firing Art Clay Silver Jewelry

The Art Clay Silver material used in our jewelry-making workshops was developed and manufactured in Japan. It is essentially a clay-like material made from real pure silver ground into an extremely fine powder, mixed with an organic binder and water. In texture, it is most similar to clay.
In its wet state, this silver clay can be easily shaped into jewelry. Once dry, it can be fired. During firing, the organic binder holding the fine silver particles together burns away, the silver particles fuse together, and the result is 99.9% pure silver.

How should Art Clay Silver jewelry be prepared for firing?

For successful firing, it is important to follow a few basic rules, which you can also learn in our jewelry-making workshops.
Once removed from its packaging, Art Clay Silver is a soft, clay-like material that can be shaped by hand. Just like clay, it begins to dry and harden when exposed to air.
After shaping, silver clay may appear dry quite quickly, but there may still be moisture inside. Only completely dry pieces should be fired, so it is important that they are dry all the way through.

How long does it take to dry completely, and how can we check whether a piece of jewelry made from silver clay is truly dry?

If the finished pieces are left to dry at room temperature, complete drying may take half a day to a full day, depending on the size of the piece, the temperature, and the humidity of the air.

Drying can be accelerated by placing the jewelry pieces on a radiator, on an electric warming plate, such as a kitchen warming tray at around 50°C, or in an oven set to 50°C. They can also be dried with a hairdryer. With these methods, the pieces can become completely dry in as little as 30–60 minutes. Keep in mind that the larger and more complex the piece is, the longer the drying time may be.

For a flat piece of jewelry, complete drying can be checked in the following way:
– Place the warmed jewelry piece on a cold mirror surface, no warmer than room temperature.
– Leave it on the mirror for a few seconds.
– After removing the piece, check whether any condensation mark remains on the surface of the mirror.
– If you see a foggy mark, continue drying the piece.
– If it does not leave any condensation mark behind, the jewelry is most likely dry.

It is always better to be on the safe side, as pieces that are not fully dry may crack, blister, or split open during firing due to steam escaping from inside them. In extreme cases, they may even explode.

Firing Art Clay Silver in a Kiln — Step by Step

1. Prepare the firing accessories: a heat-resistant firing board, a loading spatula or fork, room-temperature water in a small bowl, and metal tweezers.

2. Turn on the kiln and heat it to the firing temperature, with temperature holding:
800°C

3. Place the jewelry pieces, arranged on the heat-resistant firing board, into the kiln.

4. Wait until the kiln heats back up to the firing temperature — 800°C — then fire the pieces for 5–10 minutes.
The larger the piece, the longer it is worth holding it at temperature. However, 10 minutes is sufficient for a piece weighing no more than 20 g. If a piece remains in the kiln at 800°C for longer, it will not be damaged.

5. After removing the fired jewelry pieces from the kiln, wait 10–15 seconds, then use tweezers to place them into room-temperature water so they can cool down. Don’t be alarmed if they sizzle from the heat.
Alternatively, you can leave them to cool on the loading board.

6. The silver jewelry pieces have now been fired and are almost ready. Only the final touches remain: the white oxide layer on the surface can be removed with a wire brush or sanding sponge.
After that, depending on the desired finish, the pieces can also be filed, sanded, and polished.

Firing Art Clay Silver with a Gas Torch

Art Clay Silver jewelry can also be fired with a gas torch by placing the pieces on a heat-resistant brick and firing mesh. Depending on the size of the piece, we recommend using either a small gas burner or a larger handheld torch, similar to those used by metalsmiths for soldering.
In this case, place the jewelry pieces on the firing mesh and heat them until they begin to glow an orange-red color. Keep them at this same heat level continuously for a few minutes. It is worth turning off the lights so you can see the process more clearly. Depending on the size of the jewelry piece, firing may take a few minutes. Be careful: if the piece is overheated, it may melt. A warning sign of this is when the surface suddenly becomes shiny.
Once firing is complete, leave the jewelry piece to cool, or wait 5–10 seconds, then use metal tweezers to place it into a bowl filled with room-temperature water.

Firing Mistakes

Even the best makers can experience mistakes during firing, so we have collected the most common issues:

– The jewelry exploded or cracked during firing
Most likely, the jewelry piece was not completely dry, and the moisture trapped inside caused it to crack or burst apart.

– The surface of the jewelry melted or blistered
The firing temperature was too high, causing the silver to melt or “flow” during firing.

This is the original version, and it is the material most people use — just like the participants in our workshops. We also recommend it to anyone who would like to create hypoallergenic jewelry. It is excellent for shaping, easy to sand, and can be fired at a lower temperature, around 650–800°C — either in a small kiln or with a gas torch. After firing, pure silver (99.9%) remains, which can then be polished or patinated.
Ideal for pendants, earrings, or rings.

Art Clay Silver 950
This version is designed for creating stronger, harder, and more durable jewelry pieces.
After firing, the result is 95% pure silver, which has greater hardness, making it much more suitable for everyday rings, thin pieces, or jewelry exposed to stronger mechanical stress, such as a bracelet.
It is also a perfect choice for more professional-level work.

Art Clay Silver Paste — for when you want to create fine details

Silver paste is a thick, fluid form of Art Clay Silver, developed specifically for joining pieces, making fine repairs, adding decorative details, and creating effects such as silver leaves.

What can it be used for?

As an adhesive when joining elements made from Art Clay Silver clay, or when making rings.
For filling and repairing possible cracks in dried objects made from Art Clay Silver clay before firing.
For creating small surface patterns and textures.
For example, it can be used to coat leaves. After firing, the organic leaf burns away, leaving only the silver leaf behind.

Art Clay Silver Syringe — creating three-dimensional patterns with ease

The syringe type is suitable for decorating pieces made from silver clay, as well as for creating flat or three-dimensional openwork patterns and pierced surfaces. The material is similar to Art Clay Silver Paste, but slightly thicker in consistency, and can be applied through a syringe with a fine nozzle. It allows you to draw precise patterns before firing, either onto pieces made from silver clay or onto a core made from a material that burns away during firing, such as wood clay, cork, or paper forms.

What can it be used for?

For building lace-like, three-dimensional patterns, such as flowers, petals, and mesh-like structures.
For surface decoration, on both flat and raised surfaces.
It can also be used to strengthen structural connections.

What happens during our one-day workshop?
During our one-day Art Clay workshop, we create several pieces of jewelry, one of which is always a silver ring. In addition, participants typically make two smaller pendants or a pair of earrings, using a total of 15 g of Art Clay Silver material.

Two-day Art Clay Silver workshop
If you would really like to immerse yourself in jewelry making and create several silver rings, we recommend our two-day Art Clay Silver jewelry-making workshop. During this workshop, we create 4–6 silver jewelry pieces, including 2 rings. Over the two days, we use a total of 30 g of Art Clay Silver silver clay to create the jewelry pieces.

Level I Silver Jewelry-Making Workshop
The Level I workshop is the most complex of all our workshops, but also the most structured. Following the Official Japanese Curriculum, we introduce a wide range of techniques, which participants learn by creating the required pieces. During this workshop, in addition to other silver jewelry pieces, we create a total of 2–3 rings, each with a much more complex finish. One of the silver rings is decorated using the syringe technique, creating an organic, raised motif on the surface of the ring. The second silver ring is made with a complex top section, into which we also set a pearl during the workshop.

What type of jewelry can you create with us during a ring-making workshop?

To summarize the above, depending on which of our workshops that include silver ring making you choose, you may have the opportunity to create the following types of rings:

Silver ring with a structured surface / One-day workshop

What style of jewelry can you create with us during a ring-making workshop?

Among beginner and intermediate techniques, participants can create rings with an organic design or ornamental decoration during a workshop. At the same time, for advanced and professional makers, the material also makes it possible to create silver rings with highly precise geometric forms.

How to prepare for an Art Clay Silver silver ring-making workshop

When coming to one of our silver ring-making workshops in Budapest, please wear comfortable clothing that is not too delicate. Other than that, there is nothing you need to prepare. We provide all the tools you will need during the workshop to create your own silver jewelry. Of course, if you have any tools or modeling tools you enjoy using, feel free to bring them with you.

Perhaps most importantly, if you are planning to make the jewelry created during the ring-making workshop as a gift, you should definitely know the recipient’s ring size — in other words, the size in which the ring needs to be made.
Don’t forget to bring your good mood and creative spirit with you!

How to take the right measurement if the ring you create during the ring-making workshop is intended as a surprise gift

When making a surprise ring, the most difficult question is how to find out your loved one’s ring size.
That’s why we’ll now go through the options available to you.

It is important to decide right at the beginning how wide you would like the ring to be, as the wider a ring is, the tighter it will feel and the less room it allows for the finger to move. For a ring that is 5–6 mm wide, you may need to make it 1–2 sizes larger than you would for a ring that is only 2–3 mm wide.

Ring sizer set

The easiest option, of course, is when you do not need to keep your plans a secret and can measure the recipient’s ring size with the help of a ring sizer set. A ring sizer set like this is not a small investment, but someone may be able to lend you one.

It is important to know that ring sizer sets are generally not standardized worldwide. For example, the numbering used on a ring sizer set in Italy may not necessarily match the system used in Hungary. That is why you should always note what type of ring sizer you used.

Paper strip

A slightly more complicated method, but one that can even be done secretly, is to use a paper strip.
To do this, cut a strip of paper to the same width as the ring you would like to make. Wrap it around the person’s finger and mark the point where the strip meets itself. It is important not to pull the strip too tight. It is better if it has a little room to move, but definitely not so much that it could easily slip off.

How do our jewelry-making workshops work?

Our jewelry-making workshops usually begin with a brief introduction and detailed technical information, followed by a practical demonstration of how to use the silver clay. After this, with theoretical knowledge of the techniques, everyone designs their own piece of jewelry, which they will create during the workshop. Our workshop leaders will, of course, assist you with inspiration and ideas.
After the theoretical and design phase comes one of the most exciting parts: creating the jewelry and properly drying it. After drying, we further refine the shape and then fire it in a kiln. Then, Voila! Your custom-designed silver jewelry is ready! You can polish and shine it, but it’s essentially ready to wear!

How should you prepare for an Art Clay Silver jewelry-making workshop?

For our jewelry-making workshops in Budapest, please wear comfortable clothing, but there is nothing else you need to prepare. We provide all the tools you will need during the workshop to create your own silver jewelry. Of course, if you have any tools you enjoy using, feel free to bring them with you.
Modeling tools, for example, can be useful when shaping the silver clay and forming your piece.

Most importantly, don’t forget to bring your creative spirit with you!

Art Clay Silver arrived in Hungary more than a decade and a half ago, and not long after that, the idea of the first jewelry-making workshops also emerged. Their launch was preceded by serious preparation. Instructors representing the manufacturer came from Japan to train our Hungarian team in the use of the material and to help develop the curriculum for the basic courses and workshops. It has been a long journey to make Art Clay Silver known in Hungary as a material.

What is Art Clay Silver, and why do we use it in our jewelry-making workshops?

How do our jewelry-making workshops work?

Our jewelry-making workshops usually begin with a short introduction and detailed technical information, followed by a practical demonstration of how to use silver clay. After this, once everyone understands the basic techniques, participants design the jewelry piece they will create during the workshop. Of course, our workshop instructors will support you with inspiration and ideas throughout this process.
After the theoretical and design phase comes one of the most exciting parts: creating the jewelry pieces and drying them properly. Once dry, we refine the form further and then fire the pieces in a kiln.
And voilà — your own self-designed silver jewelry is ready! You can sand and polish it further, but it is essentially ready to wear.
